Getting motivated to follow Christ with all your heart can feel a little meh because it can appear so complicated. Like, “No, I don’t understand the bible,” “I never felt that my life was that bad, but now there are all the rules on what I should and shouldn’t do.” “And what’s going on with all the weird people doing weird things in church.” We all go through it. Even if you’ve been in a positive Christian atmosphere all your life. Once you’ve made a personal decision to follow Christ, the questions come in like a flood. So here’s a simple phrase that I’ve concluded that can get you through the start growing in your faith. Step 3: Keep it Simple: believe, listen, and do. The word of God says:
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
God came to simplify your life, so relish in that by keeping your eyes on him. I feel that because we lack knowledge and understanding in many areas, as we start looking toward God, we may not be able to see all of him clearly. Yet, as we grow, we begin to see more and more of him. The key here is to keep your eyes on the little bit or a lot bit that you can see. If you cant pray in tongues yet keep praying in English. If you don’t understand, all translations stick with the ones you do. Start where you are and Keep it simple.
Believe. Believing is the root from which all things grow. You must first believe in God before we even get to the rest. So before you continue through this post, do you genuinely believe in the one true God? Do you believe in his word enough to obey it? Do you believe in God’s intentions and abilities to trust him? Belief looks so small, but it stands hand in hand with faith. If we want to do life with the Father, we have to believe in the existence, authority, power, promises, wisdom, and correction.
Listen. God has a voice, and it speaks by His Spirit and His Word. His voice in the “coincidences” of your day, in scriptures you read, in the random feeling of peace, or the knowings you feel. There are times when the surroundings and the juggling of life becomes too loud. Quiet your mind and your heart daily to receive instruction from the Lord. Be open to anything he may speak to you. It can be “read that scripture,” “clean your room,” “leave the job,” ‘date the guy,” etc.
Do. Be obedient to the one you believe in and words that have been spoken to you. Obedience should be simple, but the circumstances of life, our own desires, and fallen nature can, at times, get in the way. The bible actually says those who do my will are the ones that love me.
This is the last step of this Series, but there’s a whole lot more to share. There were concepts I practiced at the beginning of my faith that really kept me intact. If there were anything else I could add, it would be to surround yourself with people who support your growth in God. Not in a religious way but a loving way. God has called for us to do this life together and not alone. Remember: Have a Glad Heart, Trust God, & Keep it Simple: Believe, Listen, and Do.
