Hi, my people. I’m always happy to share with you all what the Lord has placed on my heart. Many times it’s spur of the moment and deeply inspired. Today, I had something in mind that I wanted to share, but I prayed that God would give me something fresh and specific. As I prayed, I heard Psalm 23, so I’m going with it. It doesn’t seem the “freshest” since it’s like the second scripture you learn after John 3:16. But I trust that the Lord will speak to someone today. So let’s get into it.
I’m not sure who this is for, but there is no need to do the most. Remember Psalm 23. Psalm 23, of course, was written by David, but it is written from the perspective of a sheep. The well-loved, comforted, guided and provided for sheep. I’ve heard this psalm so many times and the usual breakdown of every line. Yet, for the first time today, I realized the most relatable way to describe this dynamic is a person’s relationship with their dog. We all know someone who is exceptionally caring and loving towards their dog and will literally do anything for them to be well-kept. The Shepard does even more. Unfortunately, sheep aren’t the brightest in the bunch, so they need a little extra care.
Consider David, “a sheep” that is so aware of all the Lord his Shepard extends to him. What does this have to do with you or me? Sometimes we get caught up in the day-to-day, never stopping to rest. We listen to hustle culture telling us that we always have to take the lead on everything immediately. We listen to the lies that tell us we are alone. We even give our enemies so much of our time and attention. But I want you to read Psalm 23 and imagine each line from the sheep’s perspective. You are the sheep (seems so funny to type – this is not hypnosis, I promise.) But, seriously, as you imagine this, do you feel the sweet, peaceful joy of the sheep resting in green meadows? Do you feel the child-like comfort of clutching close to the sheppard as you walk through a dark and scary place? Did you sense the sheep’s relief as the Sheppard tells him it’s ok to eat while the lion waits in the shadows because the Sheppard is protecting him? (That’s what it really means. It has nothing to do with God showing out in front of your haters. I know, disappointing HAHA). Did you feel the joy, relief, peace, and ease stored in every line? This is what a life focused on the Lord is like.
Through every basic need, anxiety, and fear, the sheep repeatedly recounted what the Sheppard had done for him. This is how we hold onto peace. We stay close and keep our eyes on the Sheppard. So if you’re worried, stressed, or tired, remember how God came through last time, how he has restored your weariness, and how he is with your even now! Like a Good Sheppard, he shows up every day for you, his sheep. Do you see him? Do you know how he loves and takes care of you?
